APA-Nouakchott (Mauritania) – The Senegalese leader, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, landed in Nouakchott on Thursday 18 April for a working visit.
For his first trip outside Senegal since taking office on 2 April 2024, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye has chosen Mauritania.
He was received on Thursday morning at Nouakchott International Airport by his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who is also the current chair of the African Union.
After the traditional welcome ceremony, with the colours being raised on the airport tarmac in honour of President Faye, he was received by his host at the Presidential Palace.
The two leaders discussed “bilateral cooperation relations between the two brotherly countries and ways of developing and strengthening these relations in various fields”, according to the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI).
AMI also reports that, in addition to the Senegalese delegation, the talks were extended to several other ministers, including those responsible for the Office of the President of the Republic, Mokhtar Diaye, Justice, Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Cheikh Abdoullah Ben Boya, Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Mokhtar Housseini Lam, and Equipment and Transport, Mohamed Aly Sidi Mohamed, etc.
According to the Senegalese Presidency, this one-day visit to Nouakchott is aimed at “strengthening the longstanding cooperation between the two countries”.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who returns to Dakar later on Thursday evening is expected in The Gambia on Saturday for his second official trip abroad.
