APA-Nouakchott (Mauritania) – The predecessor of Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for illicit enrichment.
A trial that has kept Mauritania in suspense for several months has reached its conclusion.
On Monday, a court in Nouakchott sentenced former president Mohamed Abdel Aziz to 5 years in prison.
Mr. Aziz and ten other personalities, including two former prime ministers, former ministers and businessmen, were charged with “illicit enrichment,” “abuse of office,” “influence peddling” and “money laundering.”
In its verdict, the court ordered the confiscation of assets acquired through illicit enrichment and money laundering, and deprived Mr. Aziz of his civil rights.
The descent into hell continues for Mr. Aziz, 66, who joins the rare list of ex-presidents convicted for acts related to exercising power.
After spending several months under house arrest, Mohamed Abdel Aziz returned to prison on January 24, 2023.
