A new headquarters for the police in the island nation of Mauritius to the tune of $2.5 million has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth in Abercrombie on Wednesday.
The then police station, which was known previously known as the Briquetterie Police Station before being changed to Abercrombie in memory of British military force commander Major General John Abercrombie who conquered Mauritius in 1810, was erected in 1860.
The new facility is commensurate with the responsibilities of the police officers of the Port Louis North Division and will better serve the 200,000 citizens within the geographical area of coverage, Mr Jugnauth said.
He said the area under the purview of this police division had witnessed major residential, commercial, and industrial developments.
The PM commending the officers who serve the community with what he called honesty, sense of duty and commitment, applauded the decline in the rate of serious crimes and praised the endeavours undertaken by the Mauritian government to strengthen the efficacy of the police force through training on evidence-based and scientific method, and the procurement of state-of-the art and high-technology equipment.
According to him, the introduction of safe city cameras had helped to solve crimes, and increase public safety.
On the sidelines of the inauguration a so-called Police Strategic Plan 2022 – 2025, which would serve as a roadmap to improve service delivery and enable the Mauritius police to meet emerging challenges, was also launched.
