After more than ten months of diplomatic rupture, Germany has officially extended its hand to Morocco through a message sent by German President Frank Walter Steinmer to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the New Year.
The German leader invited the Moroccan sovereign to make a “state visit to Germany,” in order to “seal a new partnership between the two countries.”
On the Sahara issue, Frank Walter Steinmer said that Berlin “considers the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as a serious and credible effort, and as a good basis to reach an agreement” on this regional dispute.
He referred to the support provided by his country for many years to the UN process in favour of a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution for all parties involved in the dispute.
The German president welcomed the work undertaken under the reign of King Mohammed VI.
“Morocco has undertaken extensive reforms under your leadership,” the German president said in the message, stressing his country’s continued and sustained support for development in the North African country.
With this message addressed to the King of Morocco, Berlin intends to turn the page after ten months of glacial relations.
Last March Morocco recalled its ambassador to Berlin after it openly criticised the decision of the Trump administration in Washington to recognise the sovereignty of Morocco over the Sahara.
