This return marks a continuation of the successful partnership between Mercy Ships, an international charity, and the Government of Sierra Leone.
The ship previously served the country for ten months in 2023, performing nearly 2,000 surgeries and training over 140 healthcare workers. Its return comes at the request of President Julius Maada Bio, reaffirming his commitment to providing affordable and quality healthcare for all Sierra Leoneans.
Working closely with the Ministry of Health, Mercy Ships will prioritize surgeries in twelve locations across the country. The organization will also continue to provide training opportunities for healthcare professionals at Connaught Hospital and the University of Sierra Leone, aligning with the nation’s strategic healthcare plan.
The return of the Global Mercy was met with excitement and hope. Dr. Austin Demby, Minister of Health, expressed his gratitude for the continued partnership and the opportunity to offer free surgeries to those in need. Dr. Sandra Lako, Mercy Ships Country Director for Sierra Leone, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of building upon existing progress and supporting Sierra Leone’s development of a sustainable surgical care system.
The volunteer crew and dedicated staff are now preparing the ship’s onboard hospital to begin offering a range of surgical procedures, including maxillofacial, general, pediatric, reconstructive plastic, and ophthalmic surgeries. This critical service provides hope and healing for countless Sierra Leoneans who lack access to safe and specialized healthcare.
