A frigate belonging to Morocco’s royal navy on sea patrol intercepted a pirogue carrying 51 sub-Saharan migrants on Tuesday, 150km from the city of Dakhla (south).
The pirogue was heading for the Canary Islands, according to a statement from the Royal Armed Forces General Staff.
Those rescued were given the necessary treatment before being taken to the port of Dakhla and handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for the usual administrative procedures, the statement added.
On Tuesday, 120 km north of Dakhla, elements of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) responsible for coastal surveillance intercepted a rubber dinghy carrying 44 sub-Saharan migrants, including 13 women and 3 minors, who were attempting to migrate illegally.
Every week, if not daily, many would-be illegal migrants are rescued by the Moroccan navy.
