The port of Tangiers Med, one of Morocco’s most important maritime infrastructures, expects to achieve record traffic in 2024, despite the challenges posed by global disruption.
The port’s deputy general manager, Rachid Houari, recently indicated that the port is on track to exceed its nominal handling capacity of nine million containers.
In the face of disruptions to the global supply chain, notably due to the war in Gaza, Tangiers Med has managed to maintain an impressive resilience. The Moroccan port has continually increased its operations, demonstrating its ability to adapt to a turbulent global environment.
According to Houari, this robustness is a key factor that will enable Tangiers Med to exceed its expectations in terms of handling capacity as early as next year.
Security threats in the Red Sea region have affected many ports worldwide. However, the impact on Tangiers Med has been minimal, allowing the port to continue its impressive growth.
“We have also grown by a certain percentage in terms of containers,” Houari added, promising more precise figures at the end of the year.
Tangiers Med’s performance in 2023 has consolidated its position as a Mediterranean leader. The port handled a record 8.61 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), marking a significant increase of 13.4 percent compared with 2022. This impressive figure has enabled the port of Tangiers Med to reinforce its stature and pave the way for
even greater achievements in 2024.
Port revenues have also seen robust growth. The first quarter of 2024 saw an 18.3 percent increase in revenues, reaching 1 billion dirhams ($100 million). The Moroccan port also handled a total tonnage of 33.3 million tonnes during this period, an increase of 14.9 percent compared with the same quarter of the previous year.
Tangiers Med’s recognition extends beyond Morocco’s borders. Last week, the port was ranked fourth in the World Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2023, retaining its title as the leading port in Africa and Europe for the second year running.
The index, which evaluates 405 container ports worldwide, highlights Tangiers Med’s outstanding performance. Only a few East and South-East Asian ports dominate this ranking, highlighting Tangiers Med’s achievement as the leading port outside this region.
