Titled “Africa Celebrates Wole Soyinka in Morocco,” the event, co-organized with the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA), revisited Soyinka’s remarkable career and immense contributions to African and global literature. The gathering attracted distinguished figures from the worlds of culture, academia, business, and diplomacy.
The Academy’s Permanent Secretary, Abdeljalil Lahjomri, lauded Soyinka’s literary prowess, describing him as a champion of African cultures and a keen observer of the continent’s complexities. He further noted Soyinka’s unwavering stance against oppression and his rejection of any form of domination.
Wale Okediran, Secretary General of PAWA, emphasized Soyinka’s exceptional talent and the enduring quality of his work, hailing him as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring African writers.
In his address, Soyinka himself highlighted the importance of fostering stronger connections between Morocco and West Africa, citing his own relationship with former Senegalese President Senghor as a testament to such bonds.
Professor Raphael Liogier of Mohammed VI Polytechnique University expressed his delight at the event. He viewed Soyinka’s presence in Morocco as a powerful symbol of Africa’s ability to engage with the world stage. Professor Liogier further emphasized the need to recognize Africa’s immense potential in addressing global challenges.
The event culminated in the presentation of the Academy’s prestigious Trophy to the Nigerian author, followed by a heartfelt reading of poems dedicated to him.
Born on July 12, 1934, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, Soyinka’s educational journey began at Leeds University in England. Upon returning to his home country, he established a theatre company, showcasing his unwavering dedication to the arts.
Soyinka’s prolific literary career has produced a wealth of acclaimed works, including “Death and the King’s Horseman” (1975), “The Lion and the Jewel” (1966), and his most recent novel, “Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth” (2021). Currently, he holds a professorship at the American University of Abu Dhabi.
This celebratory event by the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco serves as a fitting tribute to Wole Soyinka’s enduring influence on African literature and his lasting impact on the global literary landscape.
