A new partnership between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Moroccan mining services company Procaneq will promote both environmental responsibility and gender equality in the industry.
The EBRD is providing Procaneq with a €13.6 million loan to help them acquire new, energy-efficient equipment. This state-of-the-art machinery will dramatically reduce diesel consumption and CO2 emissions, leading to greener mining practices.
The project goes beyond just eco-friendly technology. It also has a strong focus on gender diversity. By encouraging the hiring of female equipment operators, the initiative aims to challenge traditional gender norms within the mining sector and create new opportunities for women.
This collaboration is particularly significant for Morocco, which boasts the world’s largest phosphate reserves. As a leading phosphate exporter through the state-owned OCP group, Morocco is demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship. Procaneq, established in 2016, plays a key role by providing subcontracting services to OCP.
The EBRD’s support extends beyond just finances. They will also offer technical assistance to Procaneq, helping them improve their reporting and information systems. Furthermore, the EBRD will collaborate with the company to advocate for stronger legal frameworks that promote gender equality and create a level playing field for women in the mining industry.
This partnership marks a continuation of the EBRD’s longstanding commitment to Morocco. Since 2012, the bank has invested over €4.6 billion in Moroccan projects, highlighting their dedication to fostering sustainable development and economic growth in the region.
