APA-Rabat (Morocco) – The adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza has been described by the kingdom of Morocco as a “positive step” to ending the crisis.
Morocco said it would back the adoption by the United Nations (UN) Security Council of Resolution 2735, calling for a three-phase ceasefire in Gaza, complemented by a multi-year reconstruction plan for the Palestinian territory, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Resident Abroad, Nasser Bourita, announced on Tuesday.
At a press conference following his discussions with the Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, Mr. Bourita stressed that Morocco viewed the resolution affirmatively.
According to him, the resolution calls for an immediate, total and complete ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the enclave and the return of displaced persons.
Bourita mentioned that this resolution is perceived by the kingdom as ‘a positive step’ towards the cessation of hostilities, in harmony with the appeal launched by King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, calling for an immediate, total and lasting halt to the fighting, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the refusal of any population displacement, considering the Gaza Strip to be an integral part of the Palestinian territories.
The head of Moroccan diplomacy added that this resolution is fully in line with the king’s vision of putting an end to the conflict which is persisting in the region, in accordance with a two-state solution, respecting international law and the resolutions of international legitimacy, while affirming that negotiations remain the only viable
solution.
Mr. Bourita expressed Morocco’s hope that all the parties involved would comply with the terms of this resolution in order to put an end to the suffering of the civilian population, after eight months of destructive war in Gaza, with disastrous humanitarian consequences.
In this context, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Resident Abroad, Nasser Bourita, reiterated the kingdom’s position on the importance of the proposals made by US President Joe Biden, aimed at establishing a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, allowing access for humanitarian aid, protecting civilians, encouraging the return of displaced persons and rebuilding the destroyed areas.
