The Moroccan ambassador to China, Aziz Mekouar, on Thursday, reiterated the adherence of the Kingdom of Morocco to the One China policy, as a basis for relations between the two friendly countries.
In a statement received by the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), the Moroccan diplomat stressed that this adherence is based on the Kingdom’s principled positions, which are characterized by constancy, responsibility, credibility and reliability regarding the respect of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of other member countries of the United Nations.
“Morocco continues to support the People’s Republic of China on this issue and renews its positions repeatedly expressed at different levels, both bilaterally and within international organizations,” he added.
As for relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the People’s Republic of China, the ambassador recalled that Morocco gives great importance to these relations, stressing that the two countries are committed to strengthening their multidimensional cooperation, through the establishment of an institutionalized strategic partnership to intensify trade, promote investment and create new opportunities for bilateral cooperation in all areas.
For his part, the Chinese ambassador to Morocco, Li Changlin said that “the principle of one China is the subject of a consensus of the international community and is also a fundamental norm governing relations between China and foreign countries,” noting that “so far, we have counted 181 countries with which we have established diplomatic relations following the principle of one China.”
The diplomat who speaking at a press briefing in Rabat said that the “controversial” visit of the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was an act that “betrays the U.S. commitments to China.”
“We have no choice but to defend our sovereignty, our integrity, and we say that the principle of non-interference in the affairs of sovereign states cannot be ignored or abandoned, otherwise the world will return to the law of the jungle,” he added.
“The one-China principle is the consensus of the international community and is also a fundamental norm governing relations between China and foreign countries,” he explained, noting that “so far, we have counted 181 countries with which we have established diplomatic relations following the one-China principle.”
The Chinese diplomat took the opportunity of the press briefing to hail the “excellence” of relations between Rabat and Beijing. He also thanked Morocco for its “constant support to all issues of vital interest to China.”
As a reminder, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, is the first senior U.S. official to visit Taiwan since the visit made to the island in 1997 by Newt Gingrich, the erstwhile Speaker of the House of Representatives.
After Pelosi’s visit, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated at a press conference that “nothing has changed with respect to the U.S. one China policy. “We do not support Taiwanese independence,” the head of American diplomacy explained.
