The Green Card system, an international insurance program for vehicles traveling abroad, will now be valid across all Moroccan territory, including the disputed regions.
The Council of Bureaus (COB), the international body governing the Green Card system, unanimously approved Morocco’s proposal at its recent General Assembly in London. This decision marks a turning point, as the COB formally endorses the inclusion of the Saharan provinces within Morocco’s Green Card coverage.
The Green Card is a crucial document, certifying vehicle insurance and facilitating cross-border travel. Its extension to the Saharan provinces strengthens Morocco’s claim of sovereignty while streamlining the management of potential accidents involving foreign vehicles in the region.
The COB’s decision is seen as implicit recognition of Moroccan control over these territories. It also paves the way for enhanced diplomatic and economic relations with Green Card member countries, encompassing a large part of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
This victory is the latest in a series of diplomatic successes for Morocco in its ongoing quest for international recognition of its claims over the Sahara. The Moroccan Central Agency for Insurance Companies (BCMA) played a key role in securing this Green Card expansion, solidifying insurance coverage and bolstering Morocco’s international image.
