Closed for more than two years as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic and the diplomatic row between Spain and Morocco, the land borders of Ceuta and Melilla will reopen on Tuesday 17 May.
The Spanish Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, made the announcement on the sidelines of the celebration of the 178th anniversary of the Civil Guard. According to him, the border crossings of these two enclaves will be reopened Tuesday from midnight.
The reopening will be in two stages. The first phase of the reopening will begin at 00:00 on May 17, when citizens and residents of the European Union and people authorized to travel in the Schengen area can cross through El Tarajal in Ceuta and Beni Enzar in Melilla.
The second phase will begin on Tuesday, May 31, for legally recognized border workers, who will be able to enter Spanish territory.
