Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita Wednesday outlined what King Mohammed VI considers to be the five key determinants of the country’s position on the Middle East issue and the situation in Gaza, reiterating the North African kingdom’s principled commitment to the Palestinian cause.
”Our keen interest in the situation inside the country does not mean that we are unaware of or insensitive to the tragedy afflicting our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” King Mohammed VI stressed in a speech to mark the 25th anniversary of his accession to the throne.
Bourita, speaking at the 162nd ministerial meeting of the Council of the Arab League in Cairo, echoed these sentiments. The head of Moroccan diplomacy spoke strongly of what he described as Rabat’s unwavering support for constructive initiatives aimed at finding practical solutions to achieve a tangible and lasting ceasefire and address the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
He stressed the urgent need to put an end to the devastating war in Gaza, saying that only a durable ceasefire would help open up political prospects for a just and lasting peace in the region.
Bourita also called for the adoption of negotiations to relaunch the peace process between the Palestinian and Israeli parties.
The establishment of security and stability in the region can only be fully achieved within the framework of the two-state solution, he argued, stressing the need to ensure that Gaza remains an integral part of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
At the Cairo meeting, the Arab Ministerial Committee for International Action against Israeli Policies and Measures in Occupied Jerusalem (Al-Quds) praised the efforts and projects undertaken by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al Sharif Agency, the executive arm of the Al-Quds Committee, under the chairmanship of King Mohammed VI.
In particular, the committee reiterated its support for the role of the Al-Quds Committee and the importance of the agency in supporting the resistance of the region, its people and the Palestinian cause.
Morocco has consistently demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause through various humanitarian initiatives, including the dispatch of aid to Gaza.
In March and June this year, King Mohammed VI ordered the delivery of more than 80 tonnes of food and medical supplies to help the Palestinians as part of the ongoing campaign by the Israeli occupation forces in the Gaza Strip.
The country has strongly condemned the attacks carried out as part of the ongoing campaign by the Israeli occupation forces and has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire.
Since Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza last October, Moroccans have repeatedly taken to the streets of Morocco’s main cities to condemn the relentless Israeli violence, while expressing their solidarity with the Palestinians and calling on the Moroccan government to sever diplomatic relations with Israel.
Bourita concluded his speech in Cairo by reaffirming Morocco’s attachment to the principles of good neighbourliness, respect for the national sovereignty of Arab states, non-interference in their internal affairs and the quest to overcome temporary differences and sectarian conflicts.
