The Tenderara natural gas field promises to strengthen Morocco’s energy security and boost its long-term economic development.
The Tenderara field, located in the east of the Kingdom of Morocco, is about to take a decisive step forward in natural gas production.
UK-based Sound Energy recently announced a major breakthrough in this ambitious project.
According to the Taqa specialist platform, Sound Energy has confirmed the shutdown and decommissioning of the Star Valley Rig 101 in the Tenderara field production concession, marking the complete completion of drilling operations. This important step paves the way for the commencement of long-term gas production.
Drilling has resumed on the TE-6 and TE-7 gas wells with a view to bringing them into production at the small liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal currently under construction at the site. Sound Energy noted that the work has been carried out safely without any significant incidents, demonstrating the company’s commitment to rigorous and safe industrial practices.
The latest updates indicate that Sound Energy has successfully replaced the casing and installed new corrosion resistant completion tubing in the TE-7 well. Well completion, the process of preparing the well for production after drilling, has been successfully completed.
This process includes preparing the bottom hole to the required specification, installing the production tubulars and associated drilling tools, and perforating and stimulating to optimise gas production.
The rig at TE-7 has been decommissioned at no ongoing cost to the company, as announced in a press release on 2 September. This announcement marks an important step in the development of the Tenderara field and brings Morocco closer to its goal of becoming a significant natural gas producer.
On 14 June 2024, Sound Energy announced the sale of gas assets to Société Marocaine des Minéraux for $45.2 million. Under the terms of the agreement, the UK company will retain 20% of the production rights in the Tenderara field and 27.5% of the exploration and production rights in the Grande Tenderara and Anoual fields.
This strategic transaction will enable Sound Energy to strengthen its financial position while retaining a significant interest in the Tenderara project. For Société Marocaine des Minéraux, this agreement represents an opportunity to strengthen its presence in the national energy sector and contribute to the diversification of the Kingdom’s energy sources.
