Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) announced that it had dismantled a terrorist cell made up of five members belonging to the Islamic State.
The suspects, aged between 22 and 46, were arrested in several Moroccan cities, including Casablanca, Tangier, Tetouan, Martil and Ounagha, in the province of Essaouira.
Authorities revealed that the cell was planning attacks on vital infrastructure and security institutions, as well as supporting campaigns to incite violence. One of the members, an electronics specialist, planned to manufacture explosive devices.
The suspects were taken into custody to allow the competent Moroccan authorities to continue their investigation to determine the terrorist cell’s links and uncover the nature of its destructive plans.
These arrests are part of Morocco’s strategy to combat terrorist activities on its territory, in the Maghreb region and beyond.
