This meeting is part of de Mistura’s regional tour aimed at reviving the roundtable talks, as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2703. The resolution calls for Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front to participate in finding a “realistic, pragmatic, and lasting political solution” based on compromise.
Take place within the framework defined by the UN, with full participation from Algeria. Result in a solution based on Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, which grants self-rule to Western Sahara but keeps it under Moroccan sovereignty.
Ceasefire violations by the Polisario Front must cease before serious progress can be made.
The Western Sahara conflict has been ongoing for decades. Morocco controls most of the territory, while the Polisario Front seeks full independence. The UN has been mediating the conflict since 1991.
