Morocco, which currently chairs the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), has officially announced its candidacy for the post of Vice-Chairperson of the AU Commission.
The election is scheduled to take place in February 2025.
This move is part of the kingdom’s strategic repositioning within the structures of the AU. Since February 1, 2024, Morocco has chaired the Peace and Security Council, a key body for promoting peace and stability on the African continent.
Algeria also submitted its candidacy on July 31, and other countries in the North African region are vying for the post.
Elections in February 2025 will determine the new leadership of the AU, including the chair of the commission, which is reserved for East African countries, and the six commissioner posts for the other regions.
Morocco, currently a member of the Peace and Security Council, has previously chaired this body in September 2019 and October 2020.
This third presidency reflects the kingdom’s ongoing efforts to promote peace and development in Africa, in line with the vision of King Mohammed VI, who has placed African priorities at the center of his agenda.
