This large-scale initiative, announced by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, aims to achieve a threefold purpose:
Safeguarding the architectural heritage of these medinas while promoting their cultural richness and authenticity. Upgrading infrastructure to enhance living conditions for residents, including water and electricity networks, and providing new amenities. Boosting economic opportunities by fostering local crafts and traditions, attracting more tourists, and generating income for local businesses.
The program prioritizes the modernization of emblematic medinas in cities like Salé, Meknès, Fès, Tétouan, Marrakech, and Essaouira. These locations are already renowned for their captivating architecture and draw a significant number of tourists each year.
The project prioritizes a meticulous approach that balances modernization efforts with the preservation of the medinas’ historical character. Restoration of aging buildings will be a key focus, alongside infrastructure upgrades that ensure the comfort and safety of both residents and visitors.
The Moroccan government is leading this project in collaboration with key partners. These include, Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, National Initiative for Human Development, Ministries of Housing and Tourism, Marrakech Municipal Agency, Secretariat of State for Vocational Training and Al Omrane Holding (public urban development company).
A significant portion of the project’s budget originates from the Hassan II Fund for Economic and Social Development, highlighting the government’s unwavering commitment to both cultural preservation and economic growth.
Improved medinas will attract more tourists, leading to increased revenue for local businesses like shops and restaurants. The restoration ensures the historical and cultural treasures of these medinas are safeguarded for future generations. The project is expected to revitalize local economies through increased tourism activity and support for traditional crafts.
By revitalizing these historic centers, Morocco is not only safeguarding its cultural identity but also investing in a vibrant future for its medinas and the communities that call them home.
