APA-Rabat (Morocco) – Morocco’s position is based on the kingdom’s continued commitment to the cause of the Plestinian people.
The commitment of King Mohammed VI of Morocco, in his capacity as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, to the Palestinian cause was underlined before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is considering a request for an advisory opinion on Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.
Morocco’s ambassador to The Hague, Mohamed Basri, has been asked to attend the ICJ hearings (February 19-29) in support of Palestine’s submissions. Morocco’s presence at the hearings is a continuation of the Kingdom’s active participation in this case before the International Court of Justice.
On this occasion, the kingdom of Morocco reaffirmed its determination “to work by all legal means at its disposal to protect the legal, historical, political and spiritual status of the holy city and to preserve it in its unique vocation as a city of peace and a meeting place for believers of all monotheistic religions”.
The Moroccan representative also reiterated “Morocco’s active commitment to respecting international law and promoting peace in the Middle East, which requires the implementation of a just, comprehensive and lasting solution based on the two-state principle: an independent Palestinian state based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with Al-Quds/East Jerusalem as its capital.
Morocco’s appeal recalled the “consensus of the international community on the legal status of Israeli settlements in parts of the occupied Palestinian territory – including Al-Quds/East Jerusalem”, which “constitute an obstacle to peace and threaten to make a two-state solution impossible”.
Morocco’s position is based on its ongoing commitment to the Palestinian cause and the principles enshrined in the “Al-Quds/Jerusalem Appeal”, which was signed between King Mohammed VI and Pope Francis in Rabat on March 30, 2019, during the papal visit.
