APA-Rabat (Morocco) – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has described as false reports that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has been postponed, contradicting statements made by its General Secretary in an interview with the BBC.
The General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Veron Mosengo-Omba, said in an interview with the BBC on Wednesday 5th June that the 2025 nations cup in Morocco, initially scheduled for next summer, could possibly be held in early 2026.
CAF was responding to reports that the tournament in Morocco had been postponed until early 2026 to make way for the Club World Cup, which takes place in the United States from 15th June to 13th July 2025.
According to the association, this information is totally unfounded.
“Information about a possible postponement of the 2025 African Cup of Nations is false. CAF’s Executive Committee will meet to discuss the dates of CAN 2025 and take a decision. CAF will then issue an official
statement on the matter,” the association said on its X (formerly Twitter) account.
The exact date of the 2025 African Cup of Nations has not yet been announced
Even if CAF refutes an alleged postponement and the statements of its Secretary General quoted by the BBC, the exact date of the 2025 African Cup does not yet seem to have been set (summer 2025 in Morocco).
It remains to be seen what the governing body of African football will say in its official communiqué.
32 club teams will be taking part in the new Club World Cup in the United States. They include Wydad Casablanca, Al-Ahly, Esperance Tunis and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Many African players are expected to play for African, European and Asian clubs. With the Club World Cup scheduled for mid-July, the African Nations Cup could possibly take place immediately afterwards.
CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba alluded to this fact and to the heavy matche schedules in his interview with the BBC, which could be a reason for a possible postponement to early 2026.
