According to the General Department of Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR), Morocco’s prison population is estimated at 100,004 inmates, while bed capacity does not exceed 64,600.
The DGAPR claims that this situation is worrying, despite efforts to build new prisons.
This situation could worsen if the arrest rate of recent months is maintained and urgent measures are not taken, the DGAPR warned.
It expressed its deep concern about the situation and called on the judicial and administrative authorities to find urgent solutions to the overcrowding of prisons in order to avoid dysfunctions and even security problems.
This situation also complicated the services provided to prisoners: food, health services and reintegration programs, concludes the same source.
