APA-Maputo (Mozambique) Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi has proposed the establishment of a fund to promote local development in some of the world’s political flashpoints as a way of preventing that the discontent partly blamed for the flare up of terrorist acts and violent extremism, state radio reported on Wednesday.
According to Radio Mozambique, Nyusi – who is the chair of the United Nations Security Council for the month of March – proposed on Tuesday night the creation of a fund to strengthen local development initiatives as a way of preventing aggrieved locals from being enticed into joining terror groups.
Addressing a security council meeting in New York, the Mozambican leader said the initiative would “reduce the level of people’s support for terrorist groups in various parts of the world.”
He proposed that the establishment of such a fund be considered as part of the review of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy scheduled for July this year.
The proposal comes as Mozambique is battling an insurgence by extremists aligned to the Islamic State, which has seen thousands of civilians killed and more than one million others displaced from their homes.
Nyusi also called on the UN to coordinate the global fight against terrorism by closely working with regional bodies.
The meeting was held under the theme “Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts: the fight against terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism”.
