According to the National Directorate of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, the ban takes effect from 08 January 2019 and will last for the next 60 days.
“There will be no fishing, transport of shrimp during this two month period which takes effect on Tuesday 08 January 2019,” said the director, Maurício Mausse, in a media statement seen by APA on Tuesday.
The official added that the decision was taken to monitor marketing and trade of the product.
“Markets will be inspected and punitive measures will be imposed in case of non-compliance with the measure”, the statement added.
“The Mozambican fishing industry annually yields between €70 million and €100
million per year, and Shrimp is one of the main products that is exported to European Union market”, read a media statement issued by the World Wildlife Fund, WWF.
Shrimp is one of Mozambique’s main fishery products, and 82 percent of its exports go to the EU, mainly to Spain and Portugal.
