Mozambique has recorded its first coronavirus case which involves an elderly male who recently returned from a visit to the United Kingdom, Health Minister Armindo Tiago announced on Sunday.
Tiago said the 75-year-old Mozambican national returned to the country in the past two weeks and is believed to have contracted the disease in the UK.
According to the minister, the patient is currently showing mild symptoms and is in self-isolation at home.
He did not say which city or town the affected individual is from, only saying that the government has put in place adequate measures and facilities at provincial and district levels to handle any cases of coronavirus.
President Filipe Nyusi last week introduced restrictive measures to halt the spread of coronavirus pandemic by closing schools and tightening border controls.
The measures, which are effective from Monday, include the suspension of issuance of visas to foreigners and cancellation of those already issued as well as the closure of both public and private schools and suspension of public gatherings involving more than 50 people.
