Mozambique has established 15 shelters in Sofala province as it prepares to accommodate thousands of potential victims of the approaching Tropical Cyclone Freddy, the country’s disaster relief agency has announced.
National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) head Luisa Meque said her agency was taking all precautions to prepare for Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which is now expected to make landfall in Mozambique by Wednesday instead of the previously forecast Friday.
“As soon as possible, we intend to start with the removal of people from areas considered at risk,” Meque said.
She said most of the victims would be accommodated at schools in Sofala province.
The cyclone is expected to affect at least 70,000 people in Inhambane, Sofala, and Zambezia provinces.
Cyclone Freddy is currently moving toward eastern Madagascar and is expected to make landfall by the end of Tuesday.
