Mozambique and Tanzania have signed a defence and security deal to cooperate in the fight against terrorism and crime along their common border, APA learnt on Thursday.
According to reports monitored here, the agreements were signed during a visit by Tanzania’s President Samia Hassan to Mozambique on Wednesday.
The specific details of the pacts were not made public.
Mozambique has been battling an insurgency by members of the Al Sunnah wa Jama’ah terror group since 2017. The group is a cell of the Islamic State.
The insurgency has killed more than 4,000 people and displaced over 800,000 others, some of whom have closed into neighbouring Tanzania.
The Southern African Development Community, to which both countries belong, has deployed a regional force that has been assisting Mozambican troops to repel the insurgents.
The Mozambican army is also receiving assistance from Rwandan forces in its fight against the insurgents who have caused havoc in the country’s northern-most Cabo Delgado province since October 2017.
