President Peter Mutharika has appointed High Court judge Chifundo Kachale to head a seven-member Malawi Electoral Commission as the country heads for a much anticipated presidential election rerun.
Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Lloyd Muhara said in a statement on Sunday night that other MEC commissioners would be Arthur Nanthuru, Steve Duwa, Jean Mathanga, Linda Kunje, Anthony Mukumbwa and Olivia Liwewe.
Only Mathanga and Kunje were retained from the previous commission whose term of office came to an end on Monday.
The new members replace the previous MEC led by Jane Ansah who resigned weeks ago under controversial circumstances following months of protests over her commission’s handling of elections held in May 2019.
The outcome of last year’s presidential elections was overturned by the Constitutional Court in February after the opposition successfully proved that the results were tampered with.
A fresh presidential election is set for later this month or early July.
