The Namibian government has condemned this week’s coup d’état in Guinea and called for a return to constitutional order in the West African country.
Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation executive director Penda Naanda said Namibia is following with “great concern” the current developments in Guinea where a group of special forces toppled President Alpha Condé on Sunday.
The coup leaders arrested Condé, dissolved Guinea’s constitution and its executive, as well as ordered the closure of the country’s land and air borders.
“Namibia expresses its strong disapproval to the lack of respect for the legitimate and democratically elected President of Guinea, and calls upon the military to respect the rule of law and the return to civilian rule,” Naanda said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said Namibia joins the rest of the international community in calling for the “immediate and unconditional release of President Alpha Condé, and the return to constitutional order.”
The statement by Namibia follows similar condemnation of the coup by African Union (AU) chairman , President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and AU Commission chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat.
