Namibia imports about 60percent of its power from other countries in the region including South Africa, Mozambique and Zambia.
The country’s utility NamPower has a Power Purchase Agreement with Eskom.
Namibia is also part of the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) which is sourced from any other producer in the region.
NamPower Managing Director Simson Haulofu has arrayed fears on Wednesday of possible power disruption, after Eskom instituted load shedding due to insufficient power supply this week. Reports from South Africa indicated that the utility slashed 3000MW off the load to ease pressure on the grid.
As a result, major metropolis like Johannesburg and Pretoria were plunged into the darkness for several hours.
To avoid the similar fate, Haulofu said the country’s major power producer – the Ruacana Hydro Power Plant and the Anixas Diesel plants have been dispatched optimally to avert possible load-shedding.
Haulofu also noted that there is enough power currently available in the region through the SAPP, “hence there is no imminent threat to power supply security in Namibia”.
