Namibia has on Wednesday taken over from Germany, the chairmanship of the Women, Peace and Security (WSP) Focal Points Network (FPN).
Namibia took over the rotational mandate during the high level WSP Focal Point third high level meeting in Windhoek.
WPS Focal Points Network is a cross regional forum constituting of more than 80 UN member states, regional and sub-regional organizations, committed to improving and strengthening the implementation of the Women Peace and Security Agenda.
It was initiated by Spain in 2015 with objective to promote the role of women in the global peace processes.
Through the FPN, the global community reaffirms its commitment, to ensure that global commitment and obligations related to the women, Peace and Security agenda, particularly the provisions of the UN Resolution 1325 are effectively integrated into national and regional policy frameworks and legislations.
The two-day Windhoek meeting that ends on Thursday is under the theme; “Women, Peace and Security: Towards Full Participation.”
In her opening address, Namibia’s deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah the meeting is taking place at a critical time when the WSP is on the spotlight ahead of the upcoming 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 next year.
Also speaking at the event, Tania von Uslar-Gleichen, the Director of Human Rights in the German Federal Foreign Office has underlined that the FPN on promoting women, peace and security.
“At the same time, we are currently witnessing a global push-back on women’s rights. It is therefore important that we stand up for women’s rights and make sure that we do not lose the achievements we have made in past years,” Uslar-Gleichen said.
The next meeting of the network meets will be held in New York.
