APA-Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire) The appointment of Mrs Chantal Nanaba Camara, the first female head of the country’s constitutional council comes into effect in July, according to a decree announced on Tuesday by the Ivorian Minister of the Presidency Abdourahmane Cisse.
President Alassane Ouattara, signed on Tuesday the decree appointing Mrs. Camara, a senior magistrate, Group A single level, as head of the constitutional council for a six-year tenure.
The senior magistrate will assume office on July 21, 2023.
Ms. Chantal Nanaba succeeds Kone Mamadou, who had led the institution since 2015, and becomes the first woman to hold the position which is due to run out on July 26, 2026, the presidential statement said.
Chantal Nanaba Camara has a great command of the Ivorian judiciary.
In April 2019, she was appointed president of the Court of Cassation, after her appointment in July 2011, as president of the Judicial Chamber of the Supreme Court, replacing Tia Kone.
President Ouattara will later appoint three advisers to the constitutional council, replacing those whose terms have expired.
The appointments will have come two years before the October 2025 presidential election.
