Sonko is a prominent political figure and considered a mentor to President Faye.
This appointment signals President Faye’s intention to hit the ground running. Sonko, the mayor of Ziguinchor in southern Senegal, will be tasked with assembling a new government team to implement their shared vision.
Sonko expressed his gratitude for the President’s trust and pledged his dedication to positive change. “We’ll spare no effort” he declared, “to achieve the goals promised to the Senegalese people.”
Other key appointments were also announced. Professor Mary Teuw Niane, formerly Minister of Higher Education under President Macky Sall, will assume the role of Minister, Chief of Staff to the President. Oumar Samba Ba retains his position as Minister and Secretary General of the Office of the President.
The full composition of the new government is expected to be revealed soon, according to Prime Minister Sonko.
