After more than two hundred deaths and more than 350,000 affected by floods, the government of Niamey has released 12 billion CFA francs to respond to the disaster.
“Niger has recorded particularly abundant rainfall this year, which has unfortunately caused loss of life and significant material damage to road infrastructure and other property belonging to the state or the population,” the transitional government said in a statement last week.

As of August 20, 2024, the floods had claimed 217 lives, injured 200 people, affected 46,525 households and affected 353,287 people, according to the authorities.
In addition, there was enormous material damage, including collapsed houses and destroyed road infrastructure, the authorities added.
In response to the disaster, the government released FCFA 12 billion to manage flood prevention and management operations.
“For reasons related to the assertion of our sovereignty, the Council of Ministers has decided that the financing of the management of these floods will be ensured essentially by the state’s own resources,” the Agence nigérienne de presse (ANP) said.
Since the beginning of the rainy season, the country has been experiencing heavy rains that have caused flooding in several regions.
