A Dutch diplomatic delegation, led by Ambassador Paul Tholen, visited Niamey from April 16-19, 2024. Their primary objective: “renewing dialogue with the new authorities and relaunching cooperation for the benefit of the people.”
Colonel Maizama Abdoulaye, Minister for Water, Sanitation and the Environment under the ruling junta, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), received the delegation. Discussions focused on water, sanitation, and environmental projects funded by the Netherlands since 2022.
Technical experts from both countries will hold working sessions to formulate concrete plans for restarting these previously suspended activities.
Following the July coup, several countries, including France and the United States, suspended their partnerships with Niger. In response, Niamey revoked military agreements with these traditional partners.
These developments led to the withdrawal of French forces from the Sahel region and the impending departure of American soldiers stationed in Niger. Base 201 in Agadez is expected to be handed over to Nigerien authorities.
Niger has reportedly strengthened its relations with Russia. Last week, the first contingent of Russia’s Africa Corps arrived in Niamey, bringing equipment to bolster Niger’s airspace security.
