APA-Niamey (Niger) – The reaction of the Nigerien presidency has been deleted from Facebook, but is maintained on Twitter.
The situation in Niger remains confusing. On Wednesday morning, there were reports that elements of the presidential guard were blocking access to the palace.
The presidency reacted on social media, confirming a movement by elements of the presidential guard.
The post, which was immediately deleted from the presidency’s Facebook page but maintained on Twitter, claimed that the mutineers had tried in vain to obtain the support of the National Armed Forces and the National Guard.
The Presidency assured citizens that the president and his family are in good health and added that the army and the national guard are ready to attack the GP elements involved in this ‘sentimental outburst’ if they do not return to ‘better feelings’.
Unlike Mali and Burkina Faso, which are ruled by putschists, Niger remains one of the last states in the Sahel to be ruled by a civilian, although coup attempts have been thwarted in recent years.
In June 2020, the country saw a democratic transfer of power between Mahamadou Issoufou and Mohamed Bazoum, which drew praise from around the world.
