In a speech marking Niger’s Independence Day, Tiani emphasized that this decision is “irreversible” and a crucial step towards regaining full sovereignty.
This declaration comes as ECOWAS has acknowledged the withdrawal of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali from the regional bloc. However, ECOWAS has granted the three countries an additional six months to reconsider their decision.
Despite leaving ECOWAS, General Tiani assured that Niger will maintain good neighborly relations with other West African countries. He also emphasized the importance of the Alliance of Sahel States in fostering regional cooperation and development.
This development further solidifies the growing rift between the three Sahel countries and ECOWAS, highlighting the challenges facing regional integration in the face of political and security crises.
