The Nigerien government announced on Thursday, December 12, 2024, a controversial double measure targeting
international media, immediately suspending BBC programs for three months, and announcing legal proceedings against Radio France Internationale (RFI).
In a press release from the Minister of Communication, Posts and the Digital Economy, the broadcasting of the BBC via local channels R&M, Saraounia and Anfani is banned throughout the national territory. The
authorities accuse the British channel of “broadcasting false information” likely to “destabilise social tranquility” and “undermine the morale of the troops”.
Even more serious, the government declared during the Council of Ministers its intention to file a complaint against RFI, specifically accusing it of “inciting genocide and inter-communal massacre” on Nigerien soil.
