Several Nigerian police officers have been reportedly killed by suspected rebels in the southeast of the country in the run-up to a landmark vote for a new president.
In seperate incidents eight police officers lost their lives, the latest being Monday’s raid on a police station in Anambra State.
It came hours after four other policemen were attacked annd killed over weekend by suspected rebels who sources say are attempting to disrupt the February 25th preidential election and attract attention to their separatist cause.
Police sources say the suspected attackers ued improvised explosive devices to blow up four police vehicles used for patrols.
According to a police statement two of the assailants have since been arrested.
The attacks had prompted the US ebassy in Nigeria to issue a security alert warning its citizens to be cautious before, during and after the elections.
Some 90 million Nigerians are registered to vote and elect President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor.
As constitutionally mandated 81-year-old Buhari who has served two terms in office cannot stand.
