Nigeria’s women football team, the Super Falcons on Sunday defeated their Burundi counterparts 4-0 in the last match of Group C in the ongoing Women African Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.
The match played in Rabat saw the Super Falcons take the lead in the 25nd minute of the game when Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty awarded to her side after she was brought down within the 18-yard box by the Burundian goalkeeper, Jeanine Irakoze.
Nigeria’s second goal came 3 minutes later (28min) through Peace Efih, whose shot beat the opponent’s goalkeeper from the perfect crossing by Ajibade.
The Super Falcons got the 3rd goal in the 30th minute through Uchenna Kanu, who connected another good pass from Ajibade to score the team’s third goal after her earlier goal was ruled offside.
The score line at the end of the first half was 3-0 in favour of the Super Falcons.
On resumption of the second half, the Super Falcons continued their dominance of the game and Kanu registered her brace in the 46th minute to bring the score line to 4-0 in favour of the defending champions.
Although the Burundians stepped up their game in the second half in search of a goal, but their efforts were frustrated by the defence of the Super Falcons.
With this victory, the Super Falcons finished with 6 points and second to Banyana Banyana of South Africa, which finished top of Group C.
The South Africans defeated their counterparts from Botswana by a lone goal in the match also played on Sunday. Botswana finished third with 3 points, while Burundi failed to record any point, but scored a total of 3 goals.
In the quarter final fixture, the Super Eagles will play against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon,
while the Banyan Banyana of South Africa will take on the Tunisian team.
The winners of the quarter final fixtures will qualify for next year’s FIFA World Cup finals.
