The Nigerian Under-20 Women’s team, the Falconets on Wednesday defeated their Canadian counterparts by 3-1 at the ongoing 10th FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica to book a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
According to local media reports on Thursday, the Falconets finished top of Group C with 9 points, having won their three matches in the group stage with 1-0 win against France in the first match and the same score line against Korea Republic in the second match before beating Canada 3-1 in the third and last match of the group stage.
Speaking on the performance of the Nigerian team, the team’s head coach, Christopher Danjuma said after the match that “It was great for us to come back from that setback, and also conceding first in the tournament.
“But we showed character and spirit after that, and that would be huge for us going forward in the competition.”
Nigerian will play Netherlands in the quarter-finals in Alajuela on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the second African team in the tournament, the Black Princesses of Ghana failed to progress after the group stage of the tournament. The Ghanaian lost 0-3 against the USA, lost 0-2 against Japan and finished the last match 1-4 against the Netherlands on Wednesday.
