The electricity supply from Nigeria to the Republic of Niger has been cut off as part of the sanctions against the West African by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to local media reports on Thursday, the electricity supply to Niger was cut off on Wednesday.
The reports added that some industry experts have called for caution on the part of the Nigerian Government since the power firm of Niger, NIGELEC was under contract with a power firm in Nigeria, Mainstream Energy, for the supply of electricity.
Nigeria exports electricity to Niger and Benin on the bases of various Transaction Service Agreements.
It will be recalled that on Sunday, July 30, the Authority of the Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, led by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, announced after their meeting in Abuja the imposition of sanctions on the military personnel in Niger, who toppled President Mohamed Bazoum last week.
The ECOWAS Leaders also announced a one-week ultimatum for the restoration of constitutional order and the suspension of financial transactions with Niger and the freezing of “all service transactions, including energy transactions.”
