Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos on Friday defeated their USA counterparts 4-3 on penalties to qualify semi-final of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.
The tension-packed encounter ended 1-1 at full time and the game was decided on penalty shootout.
The Flamingosof Nigeria went into the lead in the 27th minute of the match through Omamuzo Edafe, who converted the penalty awarded to her team when her teammate was brought down within the 18-yard box.
Amelia Villarreal of the USA got the equalizer for her side when her shot was deflected inside the box by a Nigerian defender to bring the score line to 1-1.
The second half recorded no goals and the match was decided through penalty shootout and the Nigerian team converted 4, while USA converted 3.
The Flamingos will play the winner of the quarter final match between Tanzania and Columbia for the semi-final slot.
In the other quarter final match played on Friday, Germany defeated Brazil 2-0 to book a place in the semi-final stage of the tournament.
