The Nigerian Government has expressed support for the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, hailing the milestone as an opportunity to end the tragic loss of lives and the suffering of civilians in Gaza.
According to the statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Acting spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government commended Egypt, Qatar and the United States for their key roles in the negotiations leading to the agreement, which they will oversee as international guarantors.
The Nigerian government urges all parties to abide by the commitments made and progress in the subsequent phases of the agreement.
It reiterates its support for a two-state solution as the path to lasting peace between Israel and Palestine.
It will be recalled that the Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani had announced on Wednesday that Israel and Hamas had reached a ceasefire agreement, which was to take effect on Sunday, subject to approval by the Israeli Government and that the ceasefire is expected to last for 42 days.
The agreement provides for an exchange of hostages between the two sides, as well as the return of Palestinians forcibly displaced by Israel to their homes in Gaza.
It also includes facilitating the movement of the wounded and sick so that they can receive medical treatment as well as redefining the position of Israeli forces across the Gaza border.
