The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has issued a stern warned individuals or groups against advocating for a military takeover in Nigeria.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said in a statement that such action was treasonable under the Nigerian Constitution.
In the statement, the military reaffirmed its loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its commitment to upholding democracy in Nigeria.
The statement made it clear that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) “remain focused on their statutory duties, which include protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and ensuring peace and security”.
“Additionally, those advocating for a military takeover, as seen in a viral video, should be aware that such actions are treasonable under the Constitution,” Brigadier General Gusau said.
He further underscored that the military is steadfast in its commitment to democracy and fully supports President Tinubu’s administration.
Gusau noted that the relative peace being enjoyed in the country is a result of the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the Armed Forces leadership and reassured Nigerians that the military, in collaboration with other security agencies, will take all necessary measures to prevent any attempts at unconstitutional change.
“The military remains focused on achieving its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s integrity,” Gusau said, adding that “the AFN and relevant security agencies have been mandated to take necessary action against any individual or group advocating for unconstitutional changes in the country.”
It will be recalled that during the #EndBadGovernance protests in some northern states, some youths called on the military to take over the federal government because of the prevailing economic hardships in the country.
