According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, 72.7 million or 86.63 percent of registered voters who have collected their permanent voting cards, are expected to take part in the election.
INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu was confident Friday that 119,973 polling units in all 1,082 constituencies will open simultaneously throughout the country by 8 am today.
Yakubu said that the commission had effectively tackled the challenge of logistics as materials for the election have been earlier delivered to all states and the FCT.
However, INEC has postponed till 23 March the House of Assembly election for the Nassarawo/Binyeri State Constituency of Mayo Belwa Local Government Area in Adamawa following the death of a member of the assembly, Mr Adamu Kwanate, who was a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election.
Until his death on Wednesday, Kwanate was the member representing the state constituency in question.
Voters in the constituency will choose the governor for the state.
There are 28 candidates, apart from the incumbent Muhammadu Jibrilla Bindow.
And there also 313 candidates for the remaining 24 House of Assembly elections.
Heavy security presence and strict enforcement of movement restriction were noticed in parts of Nigeria, including Lagos as residents troop out to vote.
Stern-looking soldiers manned roads as early as 6 am to effect the restriction order.
This was unlike the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections, which had only a few areas blocked by the army officers.
Drivers of commercial vehicles exploited the loose security.
As Saturday’s election gets underway soldiers ignored all appeals by almost all motorists to pass, as only officials of INEC and those on official duty were allowed to go through.
Some of the areas blocked include Abesan Gate, Ipaja, Moshalashi area, Alimosho, Idimu Road, Ikotun area among others.
In the presidential election, incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari polled 15 million votes to defeat former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who scored 11 million votes.
