Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan won the gold medal in the finals of the Women’s 100 meters hurdle on Sunday at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Amusan, who was the favourite for the gold medal, finished with a new games record of 12.30 seconds to retain the title she won four years ago in the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
The second position was won by Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, while Cindy Sember of Great Britain won the bronze.
Meanwhile, Amusan joined the Nigeria relay team of Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Grace Nwokocha to clinch another gold medal in the 4×100 meters women’s relay.
The relay team clocked a new African record of 42.10 seconds to place first ahead of the host nation, England and Jamaica.
According to local media reports of the Games, Amusan was drafted in for Joy Udo-Gabriel barely one hour after retaining her 100 meters hurdles title in record time and started the race strong for Nigeria before smoothly passing the baton to 200 meters silver medalist, Favour Ofili.
Ofili maintained Nigeria’s pace before handing over to Chukwuma, who built a substantial lead ahead of the chasing pack and and handed over to Nigeria’s anchor Nwokocha who completed the race for the Gold medal.
