The Lekki Deep Seaport in Lagos received Maersk Edirne, the largest containership to visit Nigeria at the weekend.
The 12-year-old Maersk Edirne, sailing under the flag of Singapore, has carrying capacity of 13,092 TEU with current draught of 12.3 meters and has length overall (LOA) of 366 meters and width of 48 meters.
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello-Koko, who announced the berthing of the ship on Sunday in Lagos said that the vessel came into Nigeria with only “3,376 total cargo onboard”.
“This development validates the assurances I gave during the signing of the presidential/ministerial performance bond in December 2023. The authority under my watch is poised to provide the leadership and technical guidance required to maximise the potentials inherent in our marine and blue economy,” Nigeria’s Ships and Ports publication quoted Koko as saying in a statement issued by the NPA.
“The Lekki Deep Seaport has by this feat, in addition to its pioneering of full automation and facilitation of transhippment, proven its readiness to exceed stakeholders’ expectations,” Koko said.
