About 60 percent of COVID-19 deaths in Africa have been registered in the North, according to figures added up onThursday by Sanusi Research & Consulting.
By May 7, North Africa had recorded 19,093 total cases, 1,175 total deaths and 6,546 total recovered of the disease that is spreading across the globe like a wildfire.
The deaths were recorded in Algeria (476), Egypt (469), Libya (3), Mauritania (1), Morocco and (183) and Tunisia (43).
The region also has the highest percentage of total cases (37 percent) and total recovered (37 percent) registered on the continent.
West Africa ranks second in highest percentage of total cases (27 percent), total deaths (17 percent) and total recovered (17 percent) in Africa.
Southern, East and Central Africa respectively accounts for 16 percent, 12 percent and 8 percent of total cases recorded on the continent.
Central Africa with 7 percent of total deaths and 7 percent of total recovered has the lowest death toll among the five regions.
Southern and East Africa account for 17 percent and 15 percent of total recovered while both regions account for 8 percent of total deaths each.
Africa has recorded 51,572 total cases, 1,950 total deaths and 17,458 total recovered of the virus.
Moreover, the world has registered 3,778,012 total cases, 261,243 total deaths and 1,275,296 total recovered from COVID-19 since the outbreak of the disease late last year.
