The International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF) plans to send a mission to Chad.
Its Secretary General, Louise Mushikiwabo, said she is following with great attention the evolution of the situation in Chad, following the death of President Idriss Deby Itno.
“After having informed the national authorities, she will send a fact-finding mission to Chad in the coming days. This mission will meet the transition authorities, Chadian political and social actors as well as international partners on the spot, in order to discuss the political and security situation in the country and the prospects for peaceful management of the transition,” OIF said in a press release.
The mission will consult with the mission mandated by the Peace and Security Council of the African Union.
According to the press release, Ms. Mushikiwabo expressed “her firm commitment to the territorial integrity” of this Central African country. She condemned the violence and called on all Chadian actors to preserve stability and social peace and to ensure the safety of the civilian population. The head of the OIF recalled the need to guarantee, in all circumstances, the respect and protection of rights and freedoms.
She took note of the establishment of a Transitional Military Council (CMT), the suspension of the Constitution and the dissolution of the National Assembly and the government by the CMT.
The Secretary General expressed her concern at the breakdown of the constitutional and democratic order in the sense of the Bamako Declaration of 3 November 2000.
Louise Mushikiwabo encouraged the de facto authorities to rapidly engage in a dialogue with all socio-political actors with a view to preserving the peace and stability of the country and to put in place an inclusive transition leading to free and transparent elections.
